Best/Worst Windows OS
In your opinion, which Windows OS the best, and which one is the worst?
Best: Windows 2000
Worst: Windows ME
ME has the be the most unstable OS known to Microsoft -_-
I'd prefer Linux over windows any day though |

You're gonna see alot of the same responses.
Best i've used: XP Pro
Best I haven't used: Probably Win 2000
Worst: ME
The whole ME thing was a complete disaster. What was Bill thinking, or smoking, when he gave WinME the green light?
Currently using: 98
Why?: Price and Gaming

Maniaman, congratulations!! You are the one millionth TechIMO member to post this question!!
Seriously, try a quick search and you'll find out where people stand on this.
Regarding ME being the worst, I assume neither of you guys were around during the days of Windows 2.0?

Well, I never used Win 2.0. My earliest experience (besides DOS 3, DR DOS 1 with the GEM GUI (Those were the days. Litteraly days. I got really good at single player thumb wars waiting for GEM to boot, on an XT machine. Not 386, not 286, not even AT. XT. With a giant keyboard plug and a keyboard and mouse tahtwoke the dead everytime a button was pressed)) was Windows 3.0, which actually was much more stable than 95 when it came out. I've heard stories that the original Windows 1.0 was absolute crap, however. Even Bill Gates hated it.

Hmm. Yet for 2 eMachines in my house, which both run ME, rock solid for the family PC which I rule with an iron fist, and the sons PC crashes constantly (kazaaa/AIM/MSN/DAP/whatever). Seems to me that ME works ok if you don't add any 3rd party software.... ;-)

Best: Windows 2000
Worst: Windows ME
Why do I prefer 2000 over XP Pro? It has far less bloatware, less DRM, and it runs more smoothly and stably.
Comments on Win ME: I think ME is the windows that was never supposed to exist. I have very strong suspicions that they originally planned to do with Windows 2000 what they ended up doing with XP. I think there was supposed to be a Windows 2000 Home, but they didn't quite get it pulled off, and so had to come up with some kind of replacement. Some facts that support this conjecture: Fact #1. The predecessor to Win 2000 Pro was Win NT 4.0 Workstation. Why was Windows 2000 "Professional" instead of "Workstation"? Almost invariably when you have a "Professional" version you also have a "Standard" version of some sort (ie. MS Office). Also note that there's now Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Home. Fact #2: You have Windows '95, followed by Windows '98, followed by... Windows ME?! You'd think the successor to Windows '98 would be Windows 2000. Instead, Windows 2000 was the "business" OS. Hmm...
dunbar - yes, ME can be great it times. It can be your sweetest dream or your worst nightmare. It seems for some reason it wasn't extensively tested on different hardware configurations, and thus can be a genuine PC Hell depending on your setup. This seems to indicate ME was released before it was really ready (or rushed out the door) which also supports my ME theory. |
