Help - I am desperate

(IP)
Can ping, not telnet no email Please help

Hi All, hopefully someone can help

win98 o/s
outlook 98
dsl
gateway configured correctly
4 other systems set up the same all work okay
5th system does not (minor item - bindings to ATM not visable in bindings, do not believe this is the prob though)
setup a different system (2nd) to use pst file, all okay, sending and recieving
error occurred after upgrading to IE 6 sp1 and removing exchange server (change of email provider from internal to external)
have tried re-installing IE, Outlook 98, tcp/ip and windows
pop mail server can be pinged as can smtp
Telnet works from other 4 systems but not from 5th
Have taken system home and changed gateway and ip address, also smtp server to function on home network
email works perfectly
all 5 systems go through another network which has an internet server and cisco router setup as a basic hub. 4 systems all work okay through this system, 5th email settings work on any of the other 4, just not through 5th.
I am considering setting up a new HDD with just windows 98, tcp and email to see where the prob is but do not like the idea of completely redoing system as it has a lot (a lot) of apps on it.

Any ideas as I have run out of them so far.

Howdy Ron - welcome to TechIMO!!

Let me get this right - this system is part of a LAN and is the only one that doesn't work? Or is it a standalone, not part of a LAN?

And it works on your home lAN perfectly with change of gateway?

Sounds like a screwy gateway / dns setup. Try a ipconfig /all, and see what DNS servers it gives. If you need to change them in the network setup, then flush them with ipconfig /flushdns.

See if that helps. Must be a simple gateway prob if it works on a diff network. Does it resolve domains? Like ping www.techimo.com?

Anyhow, if I can't help, we have network gurus here who know everything!!

Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick,
Yes it is part of a lan and it is the only one that does not work. Yes it works on the home network with a change of gateway, smtp server and Ip address. As I am not on site I believe from memory that the dns/tcp side works okaybearing mind I can ping a www and a ip with no probs, also browse the net okay. I have looked on the net and feel thatthe ip address is possiblty being blocked but there is no reason for that as the only changes were from the system end as opposed to the routing side. I have as you have seen tried all the normal things and then some. Thanks for your positive vibes.
Regards
Ron

I don't know much about cisco hardware routers. Maybe there is a limitation in the router? Is it DHCP or manual IP? Do you have a DHCP server on the network? Maybe there is an IP or a MAC address conflict somewhere?

How about checking MAC's with something like Get MAc Address? Might find a conflict there?

I'll ask DVNT1, the resident ultra-network guru, to add ideas here.

Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick,
I am told that the cisco router is just acting as a hub and that nothing was changed. it is manual ip address and no dhcp, (windows so I assume the mac address relates to just macs). I canot see any conflicts anywhere although there has to be something even if it is a corrupt file somewhere but having removed and reinstalled the protocols agin no joy.
Regards
Ron

Every piece of network equip has a MAC (Media Access Control)address . If you check that link I posted, it's a utility that finds MAC address for every IP (including routers) on your LAN. If any two pieces of hardware have the same MAC address, can lead to problems.

I PMed DVNT1, but as he is in the US, he's probably asleep. I'm sure he'll check the thread when he's in here.

Hope you can get it working, soonest. A bit of a perplexing one.

Cheers
Mick

Hi Mick,
I am a twit, I thought you were refering to macs and PC's. Anyway I will go to the link and try it when I am back in tomorrow, again thanks for the info.
Rusty, No problems, I found this site searching for answers and yes I know the title is not right but I hoped (as it did) get some response and I am happy to converse with all.
regards
Ron
