WinXP will not install!?!

I have been having trouble with loading WinXP on my boy's computer. Until recently, WinXP was running fine on the computer. I tried to convert their partition to FAT32 (don't ask) and system crashed. So, I decided I would re-partition, format, and re-load WinXP Home.

Anyways, I am getting Line 0 corrupt or missing file errors and WinXP will not load. I can load Win98 without a hitch. I thought perhaps the memory was bad, so, I took one stick at a time and tried loading--no deal. Thought perhaps one of the Mobo RAM slots were bad, so, I tried each stick in different slots--no deal. Then, I thought perhaps the HDD had puked, so, I went and bought them another one--no deal.

I am at a loss. I have tried loading Win98 and then loading WinXP through Win98--no deal. Everything I know to do, I have tried to no avail. I took out everything but RAM, CPU, HDD; everything but what absolutely needed to be there, to no avail. So, here is the system specs and maybe someone here can help me figure this out:

-MS 6308 ATX VA5 (Apollo Pro 133A Chipset)
-Intel Celeron 600 CPU
-2-Crucial 128MB PC133 RAM
-MS-8820 StarForce 820 GeForce2 GTS w/video-out 32 MB DDR
-6GB Western Digital HDD (Also tried a new 30GB Maxtor 7200rpm ATA-133 HDD)
-On-board Sound
Netgear FA-310 10/100

This system runs rock stable at 900Mhz. However, I have not tried to load OS with it over-clocked.

As I said, it ran WinXP for three months or more and was stable as a rock. It was not until I tried to convert the HDD to FAT32 from NTSF that it crashed. I would greatly appreciate it if someone has any ideas. I have a home network and do not want to run Win98 on this machine with my computer that has WinXP.

Thanks!

ChrisK

only thing i can think of is that maybe your xp cd is effed up. it might look fine, but i have had countless windows xp cd's go bad for no reason with minimal or no scratches on them. *cough*yes i paid for them all*cough*

im not sure about the laws and stuff but i would guess that since you already paid for it that you could borrow a friends cd and install it and use your cd key.

Welcome to TechIMO!!

How were you converting it back from NTSF to FAT32? Are you sure you weren't converting FROM Fat32 TO Ntfs?

Switching from NTFS to FAT32 would very likely cause some serious problems.

During XP setup are you deleting all existing partitions and creating new ones?

I was using Partition Magic 7.0 to convert the partition. I had a bad floppy drive but I did not know it. Well, I had some disc that was trying to read that had been made on a system that was FAT 32. So, like a dummy, I was thinking that perhaps the reason why they would not read was because the partition was NTSF. So, I tried to convert it.

Since, I have deleted and re-partitioned so many times I can can not count. I have used both the WD HDD utilities and Maxtor utilities to zero fill my HDD's. I do not see how anything from the previous installation could have survived.

Yes, I too have thought that perhaps my cd is bad. I know that the last few times I have loaded it on my system, there is a file (hhctrl.ocx) that will not load, no matter what I do. Luckily, it does not seem to matter. And, I believe an updated version of the file is on the SP1 service pack, so, it gets there anyway.
