My DSL modem is hissing at me!?
what is this hissing noise comming from my dsl modem? i thought it was a fan maybe but i opened it up and there is no fan. it seems to be comming from this little metal shielded box on the pcb. !!?? what is it?

its a speedstream modem from efficient networks. it works fine but has always made this noise and when i finally wanted to see why a fan would sound like that, i opened her up and there was no fan, just this little metal hissing box.

That's the same one I've got. I've never heard it hiss.

I'd get a replacement unit if you can.

actually this is the second one ive had. they both did it. this is really weird. i never thought anything about it till i took it apart and there was no fan. i dont feel comfortable taking the little metal box apart cause i might break something.

Does it look like it has a speaker in it? It might be noise on the phone line.
