Power supply problem?

Hi all,

Rencently I went to boot my pc and I got nothing. No fans spinning nada. I went through the usual and determined it was the ps. Luckily I had an extra ps laying around. I put it in rewired everthing and fired it up. It seems to work, but the problem is it is making a high pitched whining sound? I made sure all was tight and it still is making this sound. It is pretty loud. I set the ps t0 115. I have an AMD 750 thunderbird running win98. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jutah

Well, it sounds like your fan is going bad.
One way I test for that without taking it aprt is....turn off system
swing machine around for easier access
place pencil or something through fan gaurd to stop blades from spinning.
turn on and see if that stopped whinning noise, turn off right away so as not to burn up motor(doing for a second or two just to check should not cause any damage to fan)
If that is the problem...here is a good guide to fixing a sqealing fan...

you will be voiding warranty and it can be dangerous to mess with PSU.

JPMiller Thanks for the reply

I noticed that it makes the sound even if the PC is turned off. It only stops if I unplug it. Also is 115 what it soud be set to or 230.

Thanks,

Jutah

I had a monitor that would squeal when the PC was off,or in DOS,or even while playing games.Seemed that usual windows activities had no affect on it.
It quit a couple of weeks ago,and so did the noise.
I could hear it,but my wife said it was painfully loud<shrugs>
This happened shortly after a PSU went out on me.Could be related.

DO NOT switch the power supply to 230 . thats bad . it is for votage that is comming in . if you are in the US it is right when set at 115 . here is a link for a rather cheap ps http://store.yahoo.com/akidacomputer/acpowsup50du.html it is about 23$ shipped . that cheap anuff to try and see if it solves the problem . i have this ps in a system and it runs great . the fans aren't the quiets in the world but not bad and it is dual fan .

115 for the US. It sounds like that PSU may be on its way out as well. I would try another one and see if it fixes the noise. Electronics in a PC should not make noise at all when the system is off.

well it can freak out your system and make things crash if the voltage isn't right . so yes if there is a problem with the power supply yes it can mess things up . will it , i can't answer that cause i really don't knwo what the problem is without seeing it myself .

As always Omardeth has excellent advice...your better off replacing it!
Electrical noise = problems
You dont want something causing a surge or short that ends up frying your motherboard or any other components. The cost of a PSU is trivial in comparison to the majority of other parts!
