Tech NTFS Partition Error with new Maxtor HD

I have a Windows 2000 Professional operating system. I just installed a 80 Gb hard drive (Maxtor Diamondmax Plus). I have successfully partitioned and formatted the drive, but when I used the MaxBlast II CD and disk (came with the hard drive) to copy the contents of my old drive, in order to place the data on my new drive, I got an error message. The copying process went well for about 10-15 minutes, and then I got the following error message: "An NTFS partition has been detected that has an invalid signature. This usually indicates an unformatted partition. All NTFS partitions must be properly formatted in order to proceed. Use NT disk administrator." If it helps, here is a little background information. I used to have a Windows 98 operating system, but upgraded to Windows 2000 professsional about 4 months ago. I have not had any problems with the upgrade to date (except for that day when I installed it!). Since the Maxtor program won't work, I'm reluctant to buy another hard drive imaging program to copy my hard drive (I might have the same problem). Any help you can give me on this subject will be greatly appreciated.

some questions...

1) what type of file system is on C:?
2) what is the partition size of C:?
3) what tool did you use to partition & format the new drive? was it done using maxtor program or did you do it using the disk admin tool in w2k?

btw, Welcome to techimo.

At Home

The file system on the C drive is NTFS 13 GB. It is the original C drive that came with the computer. It used to have a FAT 32 file system, but when I upgraded to Windows 2000 four months ago it changed everything to NTFS. I used the Maxtor program that came with the hard drive to copy the original hard drive. Yesterday I downloaded the MaxBlast 3 program from Maxtor and it took about three hours to copy all of the files to the new E:/ drive, but when I went to Look at the contents of the new drive, nothing was there! Sorry I took so long, had an engagement.

I have had problems using the newer MaxBlasts!

When doing what you're trying to do, I now use Drive Image 2002. You don't have to pre-fomat, just hook the new drive up as slave, run Drive Image, set your parameters (ie. resize of partitions), start it, and go to bed. Come morning, it should be done, reset slave to master and boot.
