mmc and smart media

A friend has a camera that takes mmc memory cards.
Is it the same as smart media cards?
What is the difference?
Can you use a smart media card instead of an mmc card?
Thanks.

No, they're different. He'll have to buy MMC. It's newer technology and can go to higher capacity than Smart Media, which is getting pretty old. I dont think any newer cameras use Smart Media.

AKA multi media cards. Their popularity comes from the fact that they're interchangeable with SD cards.

Quote:
MultiMediaCards are the world's smallest (24mm x 32 or 18mm x 1.4 mm) removable solid-state memory cards, designed especially for mobile phones and digital imaging, among other applications. These convenient, reliable, rugged and lightweight standardized data carriers store up to 128 Mbytes, or approximately 80,000 book pages. MultiMediaCards use ROM technology for read-only applications and Flash technology for read/write applications. The cards are fast for excellent system performance; energy efficient for prolonged battery life in portable products; and cost-efficient for use in systems sold at consumer price points. They also have an easy-to-install serial interface.

MultiMediaCard is a small, yet powerful memory-card designed to interface with an array of digital devices and designed to support the MultiMedia and SD card format. : A single card weighs less than two grams and is about the size of a postage stamp. : This small form factor allows digital-device manufacturers the ability to continuously design ultra-small, portable devices. : Currently, there are several products supporting the use of of these cards including, digital music players, digital camcorders, cellular phones and global positioning systems (GPS). : These cards are very versatile in that they are able to operate not only in devices that have a MultiMediaCard slot, but devices that are designed for SD format cards as well. The normal operation of the device will not be compromised, and you are ensured broader options for use of your MultiMediaCard.
