Kids external cd drive with laptop

I have a Dell Laditude with a external aopen cd drive, the hard drive is formatted and I can not boot from the cd to install the operating system because 98 start up disk won't identify
the cd drive. Any ideas?

Do you have an external floppy ?? You have to install the cd drivers from the floppy , startup disc, to get access to the CD drive . At least, that's what I do on a desktop.
When I bought my laptop, I got an external floppy, if I ever wanted to dump XP and go back to Second Edition. Good luck

BTW..Welcome to TechIMO.

Any problems, send me a PM

With toshibas you have to press F?(can't remember the button) to access the boot device selection screen, from there you can choose where you want to boot from. The toshibas don't have external cd's, but fd's, and they cannot be booted from the usb fd drive without accessing the bootmenu.

Dell's might have a similar button which allows you to choose the boot device.
