More memory - no swap file?

Hi gang.

I got 512 megs of memory. Should I be able to turn off the swap file?

definitely don't do that. IT's always recommended to keep the swap file approx 1 1/2 times the RAM. In your case 768 MB.

Agreed, dont' ditch the swap file.. especially if you're running Windows HOG (aka XP)

That rule of thumb is from the days when pc's had much less memory than they do now. There is no hard and fast rule like that really now. However the fact that you probably have no problem with hdd space so 768mb will not be missed.

I have heard article that say you can turn off your virtual memory with 512 mb of mem but it seems that XP as well as some apps out there will not work with out it.

Hmm... I should've mentioned that I'm using windows me for now. Soon as I get my cd-rom replaced I'm going back to my 98se hybrid (me kernal and xp browser.) Well, maybe a small amount of swap file won't hurt anything.

I'm running the memory hog (XP Pro) with 1Gb of RAM (yes... 1024Mb) and whenever I start Delta Force Land Warrior I get a warning window about my swap file being too small, and that DFLW needs at least 140Mb for best performance.

Odd, since I'm letting Win XP Pro manage the swapfile.

I've heard that some applications will actually store things in the swap file whether there's RAM available or not. So you're pretty much stuck with it.

Virtual Memory in Windows XP
(great article)

Introduction

"This page attempts to be a stand-alone description for general users of the way Virtual Memory operates in Windows XP. Other pages on this site are written mainly for Windows 98/ME (see Windows 98 & Win ME Memory Management) and, while a lot is in common, there are significant differences in Windows XP."

As all above have mentioned, do not turn off your swap files ..
You still need them, and the size depends on your usage ..
I use 1GB of RAM with winXP and win2k, and i still need swap files when i deal with large graphic editing ..

Actually, win9x supports up to 512MB of RAM officially. I used to have win98 working with 768MB of RAM without any special tweak, without any problem.

Regards
