Recomend a quiet HSF

I have decided my Volcano 7 is far too loud for my media box and I am looking for a replacement. The HSF is gotta be powerfull enough to cool a Duron 1200, perhaps and higher if I wish to overclock at a later date, but most importantly is gotta be as silent as possible.

Take a look at the Vantec Aeroflow heatsink. I switched to one and like it a lot. Very efficient and quite. I see a lot of other members recommending the Zalman HSF's but I have no experience with those.

I agree with Xeroid...the vantecs are very good performers and quiet...

another option is the Thermalright line of SLK heatsinks

These range fro $10 to $45 and are just the heatsink with "steps"
to accomodate different size fans. You purchase the fan for your needs seperately based on airflow/noise.

I just picked up the Vantec Aeroflow for my 2.53 P4 today and love it! For a 5400RPM fan it's extremely quiet and my CPU temp right now is 27c. I ran CPU-Burn-In for 1 hour and it never got over 41c.

the Vantec Aeroflow is out of my price range for what im after and remember it only needs to cool a Duron 1200, nice fan though.

there's always a variable speed control fan, with manual control...turn it up for high-power apps, and turn it down at night (underclock it first) to quiet it down. really helpful for those who sleep in the same room as their pc and (still) haven't yet become used to the pleasant white noise of cooling fans whirring.
I just graduated from college, and left my girlfriend two states away (we still visit, don't you worry) and she complains she cannot sleep now unless there's some noise in the background.
I digress.
get yourself a fan which you can manually adjust; the automatic temp probe fans wind up and down often (imo) and are more annoying than fooling with the variable resistor manually.
happy computing!
