UNIX isn't free, it was an AT&T product, but they sold to Novell and gave it away to the university of Berkley. The Berkley one was where BSD came from (Berkley Standard Distribution) and that sold to Novell, became AIX, HP-UX and Solaris. These are not free. The licensing rights to UNIX itself currently lie with SCO (those buggers who made System V) and it costs a lot. Any *BSD or Darwin IS true unix. Its just some of them are commercial products and BSD is the best one you will get for Free. Solaris is free for binary download on x86 but is really meant for SPARC systems.
