wireless card +internet

Just installed my first wireless network card<<<>>belkin brand and a MR314 netgear router, both the computers on the network can see each other and can also access the files. but when I start internet explorer it simply cannot access any websites and so is the case with yahoo messanger. Can someone please guide me as to what am I doing wrong?
I am using win2k and have the default setting in both the router and the wireless NIC

Thanks in advance

Regards

Its a belkin NIC with a netgear MR314 router. The link is at 99% and the signal strength is at 100 %
I can move files back and forth without any problems, but no program is able to access the internet

Thanks for your help again

I assume you use broadband access.

Did you provide the router with the correct setup information to access your provider.

Some cable modem provider (e.g. cablevison) link service to a certain MAC address. You have to clone them in the router to get access to the internet.

I would recommend you go to the setup page for the router. You will find there a status page. Look if you have a connection to the internet.

If you have a NIC in the PC with the wireless card, disable the NIC. If you have a normal, CAT5 type NIC and then install a wireless card, the PC will default to the NIC, even if it's not connected. That's a lesson I learned the hard way.

PS-The same goes for onboard NICs in both PCs and laptops.

M_Six, I have no problems on any of my laptops leaving all of them enabled, if it is in a "media disconnected" state it won't attempt to use it. I can go from wireless to wired without missing much of a beat.

What OS are you using? XP Pro here.

I'm using XP Pro also. I should mention that after the wireless adapter started working, I was able to re-enable the NIC and everything worked. But initially I couldn't get XP to default to the wireless adapter until I disabled the NIC.

Yes, I did follow the routine prescribed in the manual. I have a DSL speedstream modem. The strength of the signal/link is what throws me off as it shows it to be close to 100%
Thanks for the replies and the information provided. I did have a NIC but I removed it without any success. From the replies it seems like reinstalling the OS is the best alternative I have. Will post the results after I redo the sytem tonight
