window XP restarting problems

Hi My cousin PC with OS winXP alway restart by itself during operation, first it alway say window error is shutting down. I tried reinstalling window but problem still the same . So, I try reformatting the PC, clean install, still the problem persit. It keeps on shuting down and restart. Oh I forget to say that when I try to solve the problem by going to the safe mode when the problem first occur I don't remember it ever restarted. I run it on safe mode to look for the problem and no restarting occur. Can it be the power supply has problem?

Has it allways did this or just recently? Maybe The CPU could be getting too hot and causing it to shutdown. Mine would do that when I upgraded my motherboard. It would shut down and not let me into windows . Then I got a bigger heatsink and fan and never had a problem since. What mobo is it and CPU?

Might be a corrupted device driver. What else is in this system-RAM size/type, video card, motherboard, etc.?

what about the power supply ? how old is it and is it full of dust bunnys ? you say it is an amd500 that is a rather old cpu . i would first try the blow out the power supply really well with caned air . a bad ps will make your pc reboot . dust built up in it will insulate it hold the heat in . try that out heat is what cause random rebooting most the time .

The immediate, straightforward solution is to turn off the automatic-reboot function in Windows XP. The long-term fix, however, is more difficult.

Windows XP lets you specify how the OS handles critical errors. To change this setting, select Start > Control Panel > Settings > System (in the Classic-style Start menu, Control Panel is under Settings). Click Advanced > System And Recovery > Settings. In the System Failure section, clear the Automatically Restart check box, then click OK. While you're here, it's a good idea to shut off XP's irritating habit of asking whether you want to report every petty error to Microsoft. Click the Error Reporting button near the bottom right and check Disable Error Reporting. However, check the box next to "But notify me when critical errors occur." Click OK here and in the next dialog.

Now when Windows XP encounters a Stop Error, it will simply display a message on the screen and won't automatically reboot. Ta-da!

That's the easy part. The tough part is troubleshooting your PC to find the root cause of the errors but now having the auto reboot disabled you can now get the error message.

You might also want to try swapping out the memory sticks with known good sticks.
