I noticed a lot of posters to this thread are from long island
Could there be some connection with optonline.net.
Maybe they spammed Cablevisions email site?

I had this website email me stating someone was searching about me. I went into the website and did see something was posted, but of course if I wanted to know and email the person posting I had to pay the 20.00 fee. I did this, only because I wanted to email this so called person. Well, nothing came out of it, the person never emailed me back. I emailed the company with questions and asked if there were anywhere I can opt of, because I didn't believe in this website.

He emailed me general questions, and said if I did not want to be informed anyone was doing a search I could opt out, but he didn't answer my question. So, I sent another email asking where in the website can I request no one do a search, I also stated concerns I had regarding this website. I told him it seems like nothing more than a "gossip" column and wanted no part in it, I also asked for my money back.

What I got, was another general question and answer letter. He sent me the exact same thing as before. Never answering any of my questions and had never said anything about refunding my money....this website is a fraud and there should be something we can do about it.....contacting the BBB for one. If you know of anyone who is going through this let them know not to participate and contact the authorities, lets put this site to rest for good!!!!!

Here is the proper link. The site is still active as I have received email notification of someone researching me at that site just in the past week. There is a wordofmouth software company that has nothing to do with the "research" site (so they say). Anyway, they provided a link to the "research" site that included an address and a support email address. It seems to be based in the Phillipines - source of some world class virus' if I am not mistaken.
Too bad they are still in business....

Looking back through the posts, it looks as though the internet address has been changed a couple of times as well...not a good sign in my opinion

My sister got the same message and I have instructed her to not reply or provide any information to anyone on the internet. This is absolutely a scam and I will be informing the authorities here in Montreal. I believe they deal with internet fraud.

It would be helpful if everyone starts to do the same.

Happy New Year!

sorry to say, paying these people only legitimize their existance online (at least to them!)
you most definately should report this incident to at least your ISP, and then to your local police department. since you received no "service or product" you should be refunded, at the very least.
fraud or no, your money was taken and you received nothing but a few "form-letter" e-mails.
get your money back! then get yourself an e-mail account which has filters!

I canned my Hotmail and Yahoo accounts and traded them for an account with Blackcode.com. I've enjoyed spam-free e-mail since then.

word of mouth

I got this email today as well. I am calling my better business bureau tomorrow to see if there is any way they can investigate this. It scared me to, as I just applied for some new jobs today (upwords movement here) and my husband and I recently applied for a home loan. This is a bunch of crap and I hope whoever is behind this is stopped.

ERgal73,

Very interesting......I am in the midst of changing careers as well and it concerned me when I received an email from word of mouth (or whoever it is!). Same type of emails as others describe alterting me to the fact that someone is "researching my background". Maybe they buy lists of consumers based on activity (ie, refi, changing jobs, mortgage app, etc) and then use the timely scare tactic that someone is "researching you" to get you to buy.

Glad I stumbled onto this forum/thread......at least I know it's not just me and that this STINKS like a scam.

I have gotten three emails...one in Dec, one in Jan, and then one today . THe first two said people were looking for my info - one professional and one socially. The professinal one bothered me because I have been looking for a job. The Second - well - because it was social. Also because some other things had been going on . Today - I get one saying someone has posted that they HAVE info on me. So - before i read all the info - and only signed up on the 'freebie' (I know - bad move but...here's the plan...) - I posted as having info - as self. Maybe they'll contact me - but if there legitimately is anyone looking for me through that site - i want to head them off. Oh - keep your emails - don't delete - may need them later as evidence.

I'm not disputing the issue but it wouldn't hurt to run programs like spybot.. that will help prevent and remove spyware that is sending out info on you when you get on line.....and a fire wall
