What's the Best K6-II/III Mobo ?

I really don't feel like throwing away my K6/II+ 333Mhz CPU (unless it's for a K-6III).

I loved the MSI 5169 when I had it. Just be sure to update the AGP driver if you go with it. I could o/c a k6-II+ to 600mhz without a problem.

The epox mvp3g series offers 1mb of onboard cache, but doesn't overclock as well IMO, since I only got the k6-II+ up to 550 (from 500mhz). It's performace is equalled to the before-mentioned MSI board, and probably is more stable.

I'm using the Epox G2 with 1meg onboard cache, and i LOVE it!

It's got a lot of nice features (Like shutting down your computer if the CPU gets to hot), 2 ISA Slots, 5 PCI and one AGP x2.

It's fast, it's stable, and it's one of the few SS7 motherboards compatible with the K6-!!!+ CPU's (2 volts)

Another bonus is 133 MHz FSB (not officially supported, still trying to figure out how to run PC133 RAM on it - After i won 'em )

As for overclocking, i haven't had any succes with my K6-!!! 450 - but it just seems like that particular CPU is impossible to overclock, but it supports FSB speeds of 95, 100, 112, 124 and 133 - very nice

I's recommend this mobo to anyone using a SS7 CPU, since it's easy to use (dip-switches), it's fast and it's stable - I had my old win98se running for a week without any reboots with the RAM running CL2 just hosting FTP, doing some power surfing and working in 3D studio MAX.... i think that is rather impressive!

It should be mentioned that I've heard some rumours about the G5 version of the motherboard (2meg onboard) is supposed to be a bit unstable, but my G2 runs like a charm!

If you plan on using a K6-!!! on the motherboard, get ready for multitasking heaven! - the tri-level cache architecture speeds up your windows like you wouldn't believe it! - I serioulsy doubt that you can find a better CPU for multitasking than the K6-!!! running with a lot of L3 Cache....

I am using a FIC VA-503+, with a K6-III 450 over clocked to 500 with no problems. The only problem with it....It chokes with some PC133 ram and I have to run it with PC100. With the prices down so low....It is almost as cheap to chunk the old stuff and replace it with a new mobo and better cpu. For a low cost system...try one of those barebones notebook computers. They have a all-in-one mobo with onboard sound, video, modem and lan, come with a floppy and CD-Rom and cost less than $200. If you are on a network you don't even need to add a hd.. Toss in a couple of sticks of ram and a cpu and you have a nice hot little computer that takes up very little space...put in a hd and you have a stand alone. You can get them in either a beige or black case.

The cas 3 PC133 is supposed to run alright, but have not had a chance to try it yet.

You are right....the K6-III really scoots....I have 1 meg of L3. For a socket 7 I have been really impressed.

I have a sentimental attachment to the K6-II+ because it was THE alternative to the Intel Pentium IIMMX and, while considerably cheaper--some even argued was better. Actually, I figured depended on speed and --like everything in computing, the environment (mobo, etc.) you put it in.

Don't know about benchmarking tests--but any way to beat WIN-TEL --to me--IS THE WAY TO GO!

Another vote for FIC 503+ version 1.2a Sticker E0037. Runs great with PC100 or 133 (only use Crucial).I use 112 FSB which really ups performance. Supports normal and + chips. Great board! Good luck!

P.S. Look up review on Tom's Hardware or anywhere. Excellent overclocker.

If it would not be a problem....what Crucial memory do you use... I have not had a chance to try any PC133 yet but heard there is a problem with many of the PC133 sticks....on this board. Right now I am running two sticks of 128 PC100 and would like to replace this with 2 sticks of 256 PC133 if possible. I would hate to order some and it not run, but then I guess I could stick it in another computer. If you have the part number....serial on the stick I would appreciate your info.
Thanks in advance

Great K6-II Board

My vote would have to go with the GigaByte GA-5AA Ali Alladdin V I was using until recently. It has voltage choices from 3.5 v right down to 1.3v core voltage - for all AMD ss7 processors ever made. Works great with K6 plus, K62, K63, iPmmx, iP, Cyrix MII. I used PC66, PC100, PC133 dimms, sometimes mixed - no problem. FSB over clocked to 130mhz on a K6II 450 - worked all right, with selections up to 145. I could never make it work that fast . 2 ISA, 3PCI, AGP2x. 3Dimms Baby AT form factor, with ATX power connector in tandem with AT power. I liked it a lot.

The Epox G2 was rated as the best Supersocket7 Board here.
The G5 is identical except for the 1 meg L2 is 2meg L2 on the G5. With a K6-3 that L2 becomes L3 and really kicks.
