Windows XP:Internet Explorer 6 won't open link in new browser window

We've just run into this ourselves: all of a sudden, MS Internet Explorer 6 stopped opening links in a new browser window. It worked fine yesterday, today it simply stopped working. When you shift + left-click on a link, or right-click a link and select 'open in new browser window', MS IE should open this link in a additional, newly opened browser window.

It did here for about a week, then it just stopped working - without any hint what happened. Now, instead of loading the page (or URL) into the new window, it simply opens a blank MS IE window and simply sits there. This effects all known to us ways to open new browser windows: including the 'target' attributes for controlling windows/framesets as well as new pop up windows opened via JavaScript. (in the latter case, JavaScritp will show a 'module not found error').

MS IE 6 is integrated in Windows XP and gets installed by default when installing or upgrading to Windows XP, there is no simple way to uninstall or even re-install Microsofts Internet Explorer under XP, so a fix is rather tricky. Simply downloading the MSIE6 setup program from Microsoft.com will not help, since the install process will get cancelled due to a newer version supposedly already installed on your machine. Go figure. Also, removing IE6 via 'Control Panel|Add/Remove Software|Windows components' isn't going to fix the problem either - all this is doing is to remove the shortcuts on your desktop, it doesn't even reset your user defined settings.

(BTW: Thanks to Londoner, a guest on our message board, who sent us a note about a program called IErradicator, which helped him to uninstall Internet Explorer from his Windows XP machine and allowed him to re-install Internet Explorer from scratch. Read more about it here: Removing/Reinstalling Internet Explorer).

We ended up fixing the problem by restoring to a 'system restore point' from yesterday, when it still worked. We will investigate this further, but if you run into this problem yourself meanwhile, give the system restore option a shot once you've run out of other ideas. It worked like a charm here, but as usual, restoring that way should be your last ditch effort.

Meanwhile, thanks to another board reader, we've been informed about less grave solution for you to try:

I had the same problem [...] The solution was in a newsgroup news://news.microsoft.com/microsoft....er.ie6.browser from Kent W. England (kwe@mvps.org). At a command prompt, enter: regsvr32 urlmon.dll Restart, and everythings works as it should.
Thanks Erik!

Thanks to ERIK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, I tried it out, entering the command doesn't solve the problem apparantly, therfor I have downloaded the program and ran it.
After the restart, suddenly a program ran just before winXP opens, the program deleted vital files, a bunch of applications were just gone, not only IE, i recommend not to follow the procedure as it has been written by this Erik ! Fortunatley WINXP has a nice backup tool. Problem is still unsolved.
A suggestion of one of the memebers is to get ride of ad/spyware by way of a specific tool called adaware, i will try that one, and let you know ..
