Sudden poweroff/reset in XP

I've had XP installed for a few months now and never experienced this problem. With the increased stability I've been leaving my computer on for weeks at a time.

Yesterday my computer started resetting itself for no reason. It doesn't matter what I'm working on or what software I'm using; the computer just resets. I've tried booting up and not running any programs but that doesn't help. It takes anywhere from 2-15 minutes for it to happen, but it's been doing it consistently since yesterday.

One time after it reset I didn't log in and just let it sit at the login screen. For some reason the computer didn't reset itself; it sat there for over four hours without a problem. Then I logged in and within five minutes my computer reset.

I don't know if it's an OS problem or my power supply or what. Is there any way I can narrow the problem down?

Michael

Perhaps there's a safe mode you can get into. From there, you may be able to check what services you're running and turn off any you don't need.

Have you tried creating a new user profile? See if it restarts under the new (or someone else's profile). If it's fine under theirs, it must be a program you installed on your profile.

Hope this helps somehow.... I'm just brainstorming outloud!

Check the memory stick(s).
Check your CPU fan is OK.
Check the PSU.
Check if you don't have shortage to the case somewhere.

Occasional resets are often caused by overheating, check any components that might get overheated.

Best Regards ...
