CRC error?

I get a lot of CRC errors, I don't know what these errors are but they are always on installation files and compressed files and when I get these errors it says the the file maybe corrupt please try again. I don't think that most these files are corrupted since some of my friends download the same exact files and it works for them. Anyone know what this is?

Hi Deltron,

Welcome to Techimo,

CRC=Cyclic redundency check,
Quote: "The CRC is a very powerful but easily implemented technique to obtain data reliability. The CRC technique is used to protect blocks of data called Frames. Using this technique, the transmitter appends an extra n- bit sequence to every frame called Frame Check Sequence (FCS). The FCS holds redundant information about the frame that helps the transmitter detect errors in the frame. The CRC is one of the most used techniques for error detection in data communications."

FRom: http://www2.rad.com/networks/1994/err_con/crc.htm

The only thing to correct this is to download the files again if the same thing happens try a different download site.

If the problem doesnt go away and you have tried downloading them from A DIFFERENT SOURCE, Your problem will be hardware, but that is rare.

Remember just because the download went well for your friend, doesnt mean it went(or goes) well for you.

CRC-error

Hi guys.
I get same error when trying to unpack .RAR-files, and installing a game with some .CAD-files...
Tried "everything" : tested files on other cpu's, used various unpack programs (winrar, winzip & winace), repartitioned, re-installed, tested various drivers.

If the error is hardware which hardware component may be causing the error?

Really need help on this matter, or i have to buy a whole new cpu, which i really cant afford right now

Frank

Normally there are 3 main reasons for CRC errors. The most common is the file is bad.
Second is, in such cases as RAR’s ACE & ZIP’s, your using an older version of the unpacker
to unpack them with. And third is hard ware normally due to a bad block of Ram, & as the
data is being unpacked in ram & hits that bad block, a CRC error accurse. There are more
things that can contribute to CRC errors, but these are the most common.

Since I have reformatted and installed a better version of Windows XP Pro I have gotten less CRC errors but I still get some on large files, I am gonna try and replace my RAM and see if that helps, thanks.

The 2 most common causes of CRC problems I've seen are bad memory or a bad IDE cable. Easiest test is swap in a new memory module, reboot and that would be the end of it. Same for the IDE cable. Don't rely on 'memory test' software- i've seen memory modules pass all tests- but then swapping out the RAM fixed all the problems

If that somehow doesn't work- could be the bus on the MB is actually bad, or chance the HD is bad as well.
