Computer shut down while playing DivX

I'm running Windows 2000 pro with all the updates on a computer with a Tyan Trinity KT-A motherboard, Radeon 7000 card, with an AMD athlon chip (I can open my comp up if you need more specificity). The problem is that sometimes when I'm playing DivX format movies, my computer will restart (sometimes it'll bring up the blue screen and "commence a dump of physical memory" ... not the best message to get) with no warning. I've noticed that it doesnt necessarily happen with only "action-intense" scenes and when it does restart it's not necessarily on the same scene every time. I thought it might be a heating problem, so I got a new heat sink ... that didn't solve it. This problem occurs in Real Player and the DivX player. Help!

i've got half a gig of RAM. sometimes the DivX files will play though ... just last week I saw all of undercover brother without a problem but when i tried watching eyes wide shut it kept restarting. I have tried reinstalling everything ... even my OS. None of my other friends with Dells and IBMs have this problem ... I think it may be a compatability issue of some sort ... I just don't know what to change. Thanks for the welcome Shawn.

I've downloaded the new set of codecs from the DivX website ... no change...

How much ram are you sportin? thought maybe if its constantly using the hdd for ram space then could just be corrupting and causing a lock up error?

Check your event log. This is probably just windows rebooting itself in the prescence of a critical error.

If you check through the event logs you should find an error and an error code. Do a quick google on that and it may help you isolate the problem.

Perhaps there's a faulty frame in your movie that causes the system to reboot.

There's 'divx antifreeze' that should kill that problem but I'm not so sure it works. You could try opening the movie in virtualdub and see if it reports any errors.

But you could try what shawn711 suggested and try a newer set of codecs.

i checked the event viewer and there are only 3 messages related to the problem:

The Event log service was started.

Microsoft (R) Windows 2000 (R) 5.0 2195 Service Pack 3 Uniprocessor Free.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x00000050 (0xcb4645a7, 0x00000000, 0xa00074d3, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini042303-01.dmp.

i can't make anything of these ... and i tried searching on google for that long number but nothing comes up.
