I did this once...I connected the headphone out jack from the stereo into the line in on my sound card...then used Windows Sound Recorder to record the tape. It worked OK...then used other software to convert from wave to mp3.

Another way is to get a y connector...connect the l/r rca jacks on one end to the stereo...and the other end will have a 1/4" (or is it 1/8") stereo jack to the line in...then I used Cool Edit Pro to record the audio in...cleaned it up...and saved as an MP3.

You need two things:

1) Some way to plug the stereo or cassete deck into your sound card's LINE IN port. Odds are the stereo will have a 'record out' jack on the back of it. Once you've located that or something similar, head over to radio shack and get the connectors necessary. It should be an RCA-2-MiniJack cable.

If you don't have a 'Record Out' jack, you can just use the headphone jack on the receiver or the tape deck (preferred). Get a PhonoJack-2-Minijack cable or connector (I think it's actually called a 3.5-to-2.5, but wahtever).

2) Recording software. Just whatever you can find that can read the 'Line In' port. The Windows Sound Recorder isn't that great. If you have a creative card, it comes with both 'Creative Recorder' and 'Wave Studio', both perfect for our needs.

NOTE: 'Record Out'='Line Out' as well.

There is some cheap hardware that will do this quickly also...

thinkgeek.com has a direct tape-to-MP3 rip driver. You can get this item either as an internal drive or an external standalone.

Brookstone has the external standalone version.

ThinkGeek also has a general legacy audio-in connector/ripper thingie here.

Here's the link for the internal bay-drive version (which I may get as I have many, many cases of casettes)

Good luck!
