Kids 19 incg CRT faking out

I have a 19 inch flat CRT ( well 18 inch viewable ). I got it in June 1999
when I bought a Pentium III 500 system from Quantex. Quantex has since gone
under as I understand it.

Back then a 19 inch fllat CRT was damn expensive.

It worked well till approx 1.5 years ago. I noticed the bottom left corner
looked washed out. Then a month or so later the monitor started turning off
at random. Well the power was on but the picture would dissapear. However
once it went black if I turned the power off, waited about 30 seconds and
turned it back on it would come back up with the picture again. This
happened for awhile ( about 2 or 3 months ) then all of a sudden it was
fine. It stilll had the washed out spot in the bottom left but the picture
never went blank.

On the 25th of March 2003 I moved to a different state. When I unpacked it
here and set it up it started giving me problems like before.

A few more details about what it does now...

Right before the picture goes black the tint of the picture slowly turns
redish. Just like as if you adjusted the tint that way on purpose. Then the
pitctre starts to dissapear. It takes about 2 seconds for it to fully go
black. The left and right sides go black and then both sides move in towards
the middle till the whole picture is black. As before the power is still
on.

If I turn the power off and then back on sometimes the picture will come
back on, sometimes not. Sometimes it will come on for about 2 seconds and go
black again. Other times when it comes back on it stayes several minutes.
I discovered that when the tint turns redish if I turn the power off and
right back on sometimes it comes back with a nice crisp picture.

Actually I anm wriiting this email on a notebook PC hooked up to the 19
inch CRT. It has worked fine so far for as long as it has taken me to get
this email written....

Any ideas as to what is going on? Someone told me the Flyback is going out.
What exactly does the Flyback do?

Is it worth having it looked at. Would it be worth it? Someone told me its
probably more expensive to get fixed than it is worth.

I hope not. Aside from the washed out bottom left corner it has a good
picture ( when it chooses to show the picture ).

Thank you for your time.

if there is a local tv repair shop who can give you a free check & estimate, you could try that route.

frankly, the thing is nearly 4 years old and probably not worth the $$$ to fix nor it be a wise thing to sink more money into it. if someone can fix it for under $20, i would just buy a new monitor. 17-19" aren't that expensive anymore...

BTW, welcome to techimo
