XP machine wont boot into safe mode..??

Hiya all,

I've got a strange problem.. My computer wont boot into safe mode but it will boot normally just fine. I did a clean install.

Every once in a while if I 'restart' , the computer will hang on boot right after the lower white lines finish and the screen goes to the next image. Doesn't always do it but when it does I need to shut down and then it restarts fine.

The boot into safe mode hangs at the same place, but shutting down doesn't help the situation.

I don't need to get into safe mode at the moment ( I was originally trying to boot to command prompt to 'defrag c:' but ran into the wall). I'm worried that I wont be able to get into safe mode when I need it.

Yes, I tried restore and no luck..

Any ideas?
