How to pull sound from movies?

I want to pull some soundtracks from movies. What's the easiest way to go about this? Thanks.

What format are the movies in?

Virtual Dub can open many types of files and will allow you to extract the audio to a wav file.

Well perhaps the Easiest (requires least amount of software/knowledge) would be to just use sound recorder in windows and set it to record the sound output rather than a microphone input

The Windows Movie Maker that comes with Windows XP will let you grab the audio...and save just the audio...it's free too.

get TMPGenc, select the range of source that you want the audio from. Reencode the movie and make sure to check the box on the last page of the wizard that says seperate sound and video stream. you will get a video file with no sound and a sound file. Take the sound file dump the video fiel. I would imagine most video editing programs could do it but I think that is just a simple\fast way to do it. TMPGenc is compleatly free for 30 days.

thanks for the tip, i'll check it out. i was just curious about doing it in movie maker as mentioned above since that's what i've been using.

i did figure out how to get around what i was doing however: i had a clip of someone playing a sax. i wanted the audio to extend while the video of him playing stops, but the music continues over the following scenes. you can drag the clip into the video file....and could crop the clip there. drag the same clip into the audio timeline and have it extend out into the following scenes.

If you decide to try the TMPGenc method I think the DVD Backup Article 2 talks about it for a little bit at the end.
