Have you gone into the modem properties and checked if you can move the little slider for volume control?

When I still used dialup (a LONG time ago), I hated the sound too. What I did to stop it was... remove the little speaker on the modem and replace it with an LED of similar impedance. I obviously couldn't see the LED because it was in my case, but it got rid of the noise.

If that will not work find the properties window where you can enter special commands. If memory serves me enter "AT M0" without the "s and the 0 is zero no an Oh. This should turn off the modem dialup sounds.
Let me know...

lol isn't that abit overboard? Yep, like has been said, go into device manager & check the modem's properties & turn speaker volume lowest... I'm not sure if that will make it silent, but should be pretty close esspecially being internal.

If that makes no difference at all, then ya might have the change the modem settuing for the indevidual dial up connection too.

I checked and I made a slight error. There is no space between the T and the M. it should just be "ATM0" This will turn the sound off in ANY modem guaranteed.
Here are clearer directions that may help your dad get to and resolve the noise pollution:

Select Start, Settings, Control Panel. Double-click the Modems icon. Select your modem and click the Properties button. On the General tab, you'll see an option called "Speaker volume" with a sliding control that you can set from the loudest level to Off. This control doesn't work with all modems, however.

If it doesn't, go to the Connection tab and click the Advanced button to bring up the "Extra settings" field. What are called the modem AT commands control what a modem does can be entered here. Type in "ATM0" (remember this is a zero not an Oh) in the line, hit OK, and you'll have sweet silence the next time he logs on. Ummm.... he might have to reboot to get it to take effect.

This is easier than wiring in an LED trust me.

You do not need to put the « AT » in the extra settings box. Just type in the command M0 (ZERO not o). The command I use is S11=50 M0. «Type the command in all lower case letters or all upper case letters to prevent confusion» The S11=50 makes it dial faster
