I can ping another machine but not myself

I have a Win98 machine connected to a Win2k machine via a Xover cable. The win98 machine can ping itself but not the Win2K. The Win2K can ping the Win98 but not itself.

Any clues?

Send a message via Yahoo to muno
I'm sorry but that's impossible.

If you can ping something else, selfping cannot fail.

What are the error messages ping echoes?
What is the ip space used?

Sounds like you may have a software firewall enabled (like Zone Alarm) on the W2K machine.

When 2K is trying to ping itself, are you using 127.0.0.1 or the external IP address?

What does it fail with? Is it just the regular timeout or does it throw an error code?

YOU ARE CORRECT. I didn't think about that,

In case you didn't already do this, you need to configure the exceptions and/or Trusted Zones to allow ping (ICMP) and any other services you intend to use.
