computer freeze

Once in awhile my computer makes 2 "clicking" noises and then the screen freezes. I tried turning it off from the tower and hitting ctrl, alt delete and nothing hapens. The only way to start it again is to remopve the plug from the wall and plug it back in and then power on. Is there something i can do to fix this???

thank you

Processor-AMD Athlon, MMX, 3D NOW, 1300Mhz
112 MB of memory
Windows XP (home edition)

clicking? can you isolate the source of the sounds? It sounds like it could be your hard drive going out. Might want to back up if the clicking is in fact coming from your hard drive.

Sounds like you need to open the case and take a look and listen. If it's the hard drive sounds like it's on it's way out. Also instead of unpluging it from the wall hold the power button in for 5seconds it should shut off. Is this a factory built system(HP, Compaq, Dell, Gateway)? Also if you open the case make sure there is nothing blocking the cooling fans and stopping the causing the system to overheat and lock up.

There is a program from dell that you can download which can diagnose most hard drive probs but I think you have to own a dell system to be able to download it.

I just did a harddrive test and everything is fine. Like I said it happens once in awhile. Maybe i should clean the inside and the fan with compressed air?? It hasn't been done since i bought the computer a year and a half ago. I have a cable connection and last night it happened while i was on the internet. I sounds like a switch turning off and on( i can't really explain it). The computer is a HP.

do you have a relay? but it's impossible for pc's to have a relay inside.

how about your CDROM drive (DVD or CDRW) and floppy? do you have problems with this devices?

if you thinks it's mechanical, then these devices including your harddrive have mechanical or moving parts. check them out.

good luck.

regards,
dax
