ASUS-A7V133-Will not boot!

What would cause the processor and chipset fans to power up for 5 sec and then power off.
I have:
Reseated the processor
Changed RAM -Crucial 256 mb
There is not a jumper to clear the CMOS???
I have pulled the battery out for 30 min...
Reseated the video card

What have I missed?

Processor is a XP-1800
Thanks in advance for you thoughts on this,
GilaM

Is there a fan and heatsink on the CPU and are the plugged into the header marked CPUFAN or something of that nature?

Speedo, yes, there is a heatsink and fan on the processor . I also checked that the HSF was plugged securely in the m/b.

Good thought. Thanks.
GilaM

Ok, err,I start the computer w/o any ram and the fans run for 5 minutes until I shut the computer off.

I have tried all 3 memory slots with known good memory--fan shuts off after 5 sec

No ram --fans run 5 minutes. Uh, what am I missing?
The ram slots are bad? All three

Make sure you have the ram seated in the slot properly!

How many sticks do you have?

make sure you have the little plug coming from the power button in the right way. Try reversing it on the mobo.

humm not much to say other then what's been said.. One thing I can think of is if the heatsink uses a box type fan.. If it is in the correct position.. see if u can get into bios I go to your hardwaremonitor in the bios and make sure the cpu isn't getting overheated...

here is a link to your manual A7V133 in pdf form.. it does have a clear CMOS list on board (edit page 59)

ftp://ftp.asus.com/pub/asus/mb/socka...a7v133-102.pdf

also somethign u might think about.. this is a pre XP board.. and if I rememrb the specs right on the XP chip it is suppose to run at a lower voltage I'll have to check up on that and make sure.. if so.. maybe the mother board is giving the cpu to much power?

(edit) FRom what I can find it is running at 1.75v .. which is normal voltage for even a athy.. but mine runs at 1.83..

this can be found here.. section 7.9

If your board is anything like my old A7Pro (A7v wannabe) then they are just 2 lumps of solder, you can short them with a slot screwdriver.

as for your problem, have you tried a different processor? also have you updated the bios to correctly identify the XP chip, it needs to unless you have jumpers on your board and care to set it up manually.

Your problem might be it's inability to auto detect the correct voltage fir this processor. It might play it safe and run at it's lowest voltage, 1.05v or something like that, check with asus site to see if thier is a bios flash to help with this, if not time to read up on jumper settings.

Hi, thank you for the great ideas!
Still no joy

Stripped the m/b

I have taken the battery out
Shorted the CMOS for 30 sec with a slot screwdriver
Re-seated the processor and HSF
Checked the connector on the HSF to be sure it is securely plugged in
1 stick of 256 cas 2 Crucial ram securely in slot(audible sound when securely in place) Tried in all 3 slots!
Switched the power connector on the m/b to the opposite position
Re-seated the video card

I am at a loss as to what I have missed......

Changed volt to lowest setting
Different video card
Sys will spin fans but no video
Different video card
Still no video.

Thanks for all the ideas,
GilaM

You aren't using Artic Silver by chance are you?

I just had to break my system down b/c it wasn't posting thanks to ASII though on the plus side I went ahead and installed my 1.4 to replace my 1.1

Its the last thing I can think of.. also.. try to remove the Motherboard from the case place it on a cardboard box.. and plug only power keyboard mouse and video in.. and see if it posts then.. if so.. your mother board is grounding out on the case.. This is the only other thing I can think it could be..

a few other questiosn.. did u flash the bios? if so did u use their in windows bios flasher? This is what killed my A7V board..

Daft, no Artic Silver.
I have standoffs on the m/b. I also use the little brown thingies that keep the screws from contacting the m/b.
No , I haven't flashed the bios.
I think it goes back to the retailer tomorrow and I will start over. I think I just got a bad m/b??

Everyone , thank you for your help
