Gaming modem problem in XP Pro

I recently installed Win XP Pro on my box (Frankenstein):
mobo: ECS PVXASD2+ w/ P 4, 2.4 Gig @ 133 Mhz,
modem: ZOOM V.92 Fax/Voice
In Win 98 SE it worked fine.
Win XP has a strange problem with it:
Connecting in the pop-up menu when opening InternetExplorer or OutlookExpress, the program freezes.
Device Manager shows no conflicts.
If I go to control panel, Network connections, right click the Dial-up connection and click "connect" a dialog box opens, displaying the phone # and "Dialing". The mouse freezzes for 10 sec and the modem stays silent. If I than click "Cancel" and right click the dialogbox, a window opens that displays a counter, counting down from 60 (the dial-up options are set to redail after 5 sec), and "Dial", "Close" and "More" buttons (More displays "Error 777). If I let the counter go to 0 it goes back to dialing but the modem stays silent. If I click "Dial" while count-down, the modem dials and connects to the ISP.
I searched everywhere but can't find the culprit.

One more issue:
The ECS board supports USB 2.0, but when I connect my USB storage drive I get a message "Highspeed storage device connected to a non high speed port".
Windows Hardware Wizzard does not recognize the USB/XP drivers on the support disk for the mobo.
I appreciate any help.

i don't know much about this modem, but have you checked for updated windows xp drivers from your modem's vendor? it could be that the drivers you have for the modem were only for 98 and you need an updated one for xp.

as for your usb issue, it sounds like usb 2.0 isn't turned on in your computer's bios. try checking for any settings in there. you might have to turn on usb 2.0 support and then reboot.

The ZOOM documentation says it ' XP supported. Harware installation only throws a flag that the drivers are not WinLogo tested.
The PCI modem was installed by the program on COM3. I changed this to COM2.
The crazy thing is that now I don't get these count-down popups anylonger. I just have to sit there and wait and try again 'til it dials.
The USB issue: in the BIOS, USB is enabled, USB Legacy is disabled.
