Could you possibly create a screen capture (print screen) to a bitmap file, then paste new text on top of the incorrect text (MS Paint)?

Other paths worth following:
pdfzone is mentioned here, and then there is a webring which you can research (if you have not already)....

I don't think so.
PDF is (so I believe) patented by Adobe, and no program is even able to open a pdf file other than acrobat.

Show me a freeware reader (that is not from adobe) and I'll believe otherwise.

If you can run Linux, try this viewer GhostView.

If you can cut and paste the text from pdf, paste it into a text file, make the change and re-export. The only problem is text file are of course over simplified and not very pretty
If its just documention it should be ok though.

Or you can copy the text, paste it into word, then edit it as you like.
After that you can convert it from *.doc into a PDF file again using one of the above free proggies.
Converting from word into PDF will give you a good looking document.

PS. is that what you were saying vass? i`m i just repeating you?

Corel Draw will save in and let you create *.pdf files.

But it sure ain't free!

When Corel Draw came out with the ability to do *.pdf's, the price of Adobe Acrobat dropped from $599, to $249!

Harder

BTW, I know it's in Corel Draw 10.

I know you said that you need to be able to do this in XP but the Linux version OpenOffice gives you the ability to print any file to a .pdf. Unfortunately, I can't find this feature in the Windows version.

This might sound a little complex, but what I'd do is this: take it to a *nix machine or a Windows machine running Cygwin. Using Ghostview, run pdf2ps to convert it to a PostScript file. You can then edit the postscript file using a graphics program or even by hand using a text editor (PostScript is like a macro language for printers)
Then just use ps2pdf to convert it back again.
