Satelite ? high speed isp?

Looking for a high speed solution for ISP - Lately our phone guys have been very lax - we still have a 26.4k dialup that I'm on right now - I hear that satelite is available we are on mountain so I could probably look at any us sate in the eye from here
- do any of us use it - costs? how does it work and what do you think of it.

RANT MODE ENGAGE

ps cable is not an option as the phone guys have thier reciever stuck some where - and can't listen right now even though the business community would pay and support such a move - kind of blisters - eh!

RANT MODE DISENGAGE

thank you - that felt better - wizofid

I have no experience w/Satelite, but here's a provider worth trying: Click HERE

Here's some info:
DirecPC® two-way service offers high-speed Internet access without waiting for broadband infrastructures to reach your home, and when you schedule your installation through our certified
installation network, long lead-time installations are a thing
of the past. Experience "always on" Internet Access with DirecPC
two-way service anywhere in the contiguous U.S. with a clear view of the southern sky

I believe the speed of this satelitte ISPs is around 512k d/l on average and 64k upload on average.. BUT if you get it don't plan on getting into any online gaming because the ping that those satelitte ISP's have is upwards of around 800-1000 on average due to the distance that the signal and data has to travel..

and be ready to fork out around $800 to get setup and sign a year contract for $74 a month for just the ISP or $100 for ISP and TV. Could cost more if the installation gets hairy.. When I lived in BFE I considered this option but quickly decided against it after seeing the price and then finding out about the bad latency cause I'm a big online gamer.

Thanks - jadison & Ritalin Kid!
I don't game right now but the reason for looking at it- is I am looking to get faster downloads - I was considering hosting - pics and the like - no porn - ebay stuff -
My machines are about 6 miles from each other so this is why I wanted to high speed link one and then dail into from the other when needed --if I got it from one spot- I could pc anywhere to the high speed and go online from there -

The thing that bugs me is the phone comp ran a line thought the middle of town going to the high school and gave them high speed - now they are denying that it is even in the area.
really bites - especially when my son cannot apreciate what a good set up he has at school.

Up here - we heard that they were taking about $40 to $60 per month for sat link up - bu tnothing in writting and I did not hear what equipment was needed or available

Thanks all - wizofid

We are currently using satelitte for a Citrix connection between two branches. The one thing to keep in mind is that there is a tiny lag with satellite. For general web surfing its fine but when the users are using an application the lag gives the appearance that the connection is slow. They are frustrated and we are working to get cable in that office to take care of it.
