I want a quiet XP HSF
ssshhhhhhhhh......
I'm looking for quiet. I've been looking around the forums and websites. Too many options!
I'm getting the chip at TCWO and am thinking of the Volcano 6cu. It says 39 db. Is that considered quiet? But here it says 39 db.
I saw the posts on the SK-6 and here it says 29 db with a Delta fan.
They sell it here for $30 with 4 different fans to choose from.
So again where can I get a quiet HSF. And of course I"m gonna OC.
BTW what about two speed fans? That would be nice.

How quiet is quiet for you? Silent? Whisper? I've used a Volcano 6Cu before, and while it's nowhere near a delta screamer, it's not too quiet to me.
I've read good things of using an Alpha 8045 with a quiet 80mm fan. Decent performance with very low noise levels. If you want to overclock, however, you'll probably have to opt for a faster/louder fan. There's always that trade off.
But either way (performance or quiet), the Alpha 8045 is a really good heatsink. It's recently been bested by the Swiftech MCX, but that's too damn expensive IMO.

How bout 4 fanspeeds from dual squirrelcage fans w/a 50gram silver base thats close to silent?
Noisecontrol Silverado from Plycon---I purchased mine from Germany long ago---worth every penny...
I also use the Swiftech MC462's with the first gen Delta screamer---I have one with the Petite Ace as well---both with the rheos on them a must have addition...its still the best hands down...
The new MCX462 is awesome if ya wanna cool an XP or P4---bzboyz.com for the Swiftech stuff...

Hey bhess
I just couldn't take it anymore.. the GlobalWin FOP38 was driving me nuts! I got a Volcano II at newegg.com for only $12.64 including shipping (and CA tax).. all aluminum, but it's working great .. so far I can't see any temp difference between the too. And ahhh... blessed quiet, only 31db!
Check out the Volcano II for the specs for your chip - there was a link on the front page to a review just done (it's gone and I can't find it) but there's a slew of reviews out there. Here's a link to the specs | |

i have a delta 60x60x38 fan, the really really really loud one on a thermal right SK6 heatsink, but i run the fan at 7 volts, because I wish to keep my sanity. Anyway it's really quiet, keeps my overclocked 1gig tbird happy at 40C idle and 46-48C full load depending on my room's temp. I love the little bugger, blows tons and tons of air and a good quiet volume. my comp is still kinda loud, but i have 4 80mm fans and 2 blue orbs too.... but it doesn't have that annoying whine that 7000rpm fans have. if you want instructions for making a 7volt mod, msg me, i'd be happy to tell you. quiet's fans down nicely, keeping a amount of air flowing....i'm done babbleing now...really.

I would go for the retail version at NEWEGG . The reason, i have one! It comes with a nice install poster, a case sticker , and a 3 year waranty. As for the hsf, its really quite, as long as you have another case fan. Nice size hs, and a really thin, but wide fan.

Oh yeah KoP. The Noise control silverado is definitely one of the best compromises of noise/performance.
But "noisy" and "quiet" are really subjective. How quiet are you looking for bhess?
I'm going for silent, and on my backup system right now, the loudest component is the hard drive (surprisingly still annoying to me). When the drives spin down (I have it set for 3 minutes), not a whir or a stir is made. I'm working on silencing my main system, hence the backup. Silence is golden.

I'll go with OC Guy on this one. Unless you plan to O/C, I'd stick with the retail unit--they're adequate and normally quiet.
Best of luck!

You guys are the best! Thanks for replies to questions that are always asked.
TKOP: you got me interested in the niose control. here at Plycon
Are you able to overclock with it?
Socalgal: I'm glad that you are happy with 31db because that is what the volcano 6cu is rated that I can get at TCWO.
Falcom: I never thought of lowering the volts. Is that hard? A rheostate would be great. I'll have to do some searching now.
Szech I remember someone at sysopt working on a silent system. Maybe it was you? Any pics/info/links?
Thanks,
Brian
