too many choices multi-tool/dremmel

Hello folks,

Well i finally decided on getting me a dremmel/rotary multi-tool or what ever you want to call them.

My question is what do i want to look for in the rpm? Comparing the fairly large selection in the store the main difference i could tell was the speed settings, varialble or fixed and then the range of speeds,

I ended up going for the a Black and Decker, was about the same price as the others but came with a better set of accesories. Couldnt find a direct link but click this Black and Decker UK then search in the product search for RT650KA

This one does 8,000-27,000 rpm some of the dremmels did 10,000 - 33,000. Did i get the wrong one? Would the faster speed one serve better or is that more for specialist work.
So what is the benifits of slower Vs faster speeds.

I havent opened the box so i can still exchange it so any thoughts?

Dont really see i will be doing much more than case mods for the moment. Think you would have to be mad to use one of these to sand a chair.

g

I personally like the dremel for its size, and it made short work of a 120mm blowhole I cut in the top of my steel case.

The speed rating on the variable multi pro is 5000 to 35000, but when I cut the hole in my case, I didn't really need to turn it up too much. Can't really put alot of pressure on it unless you enjoy breaking cutt-off wheels and trailing all over your case, so I don't see how it makes alot of difference.

If you like the accessories, I'd say keep it. Tools are really a matter of personal preference.

A tip

I got a dremmel some time ago ,they are great tools and handy for any number of other things as well other than modding.I had seen those roto zip things advertized on tv and thought the ability to cut with side pressure on the bit was a neat idea but the price was a bit much so just out of curiousity I bought the smaller bits for the roto zip and tried them in the dremmel and they work great and add even more capability to an already great tool.I have never modded a case but I don't see why it wouldn't be great for that as well and give the chance for even fancier and more detailed modding.

g,
I have a dremel and a cheap B&Q proline thing (£15 with a lot of tools), the dremel is undoubtely better made, but is less easy to use. For occasional light use, get a cheapie http://www.diy.com/bq/category/categ...ml?CATID=62383 (5th item down).

G

PS get back to work !!

Looks like you don't have B&Qs over there, let me know if I can help.

G we have B&Q over here in fact that is where i was shopping. Saw that one there but wasnt sure about it. Was kinda late at night and was very tired, the other store was closed with a security scare and there were a couple of shop lifters in the one we were in.

There was another one with 150 accessories for an extra £5 on that one.

i opted for the variable speed dremmel with the higher rpms.. i recommend it . I had to gut a bolt off from inside a car door and believe me the higher rpms rocked... also nice for making short work out of a puter case....

A tool we have around here that i THINK
would be good for modding if something called a RotoZip. I have used one to cut ceramic tile for my kitchen, plywood etc. Comes with several different types of bits for different materials. Jerrygarcia uses one fairly often in his electricians work. His has an attachment like a compass sort of that lets you cut a perfect circle. Also has a right angled wheel attachment for sanding , grinding etc.Let me find a link for you. A UK link: RotoZip
Look in Rebel accessories , check out the circle cutter , cuts 2 cm -51 cm diameter circles. Plus for ME, I could use this in lots of other applications around the house.
