Kids Weird XP no access to file problem...

Hiya,
I used morpheus to download some files. After they were finished I made a new folder within my shared morpheus folder and grouped some similar files in there.

Problem is now when I try to access them I get a "no access" error. Make sure that the disk isn't write protected etc.
I'm the admin and the only user on this pc.

I've rebooted, shut down, and even done a restore to no avail. I cant even copy the file. ... On FAT32 if a file was in use I couldn't delete it but i could always copy it somewhere.

Any fixes?

Steve

With Win2K you can boot to a command prompt from the install CD.

You might want to try this and see if you can use a command prompt to walk your way to the file and copy the contents to another directory.

Let me know if this works. BTW, what file system are you using with XP? Is it NTFS?

Why not try using Windows Explorer to find the folder in question, right click on the folder, select PROPERTIES, and view the SECURITY tab (assuming you are using NTFS), or the SHARING tab (if you are using FAT32) and make sure you allowed yourself permissions to access the contents of the folder. As administrator you can grant yourself permission to reset the permissions for both these locations.

as ctaylor mentioned yes even an administrator can be locked out of a folder with NTFS

However you can override ...
Although I dont think morpheus would bother accessing the NTFS permissions on the folder

Try taking ownership of the files and then reset the perms of the folder and it's contents. The program could be using the system account to lockout the current user. As long as the current user has admin rights it can retake ownership and then reset permissions. Right click the folder and click properties. Look carefully at the advanced options under the security tab for ownership.

Thanks guys

I really appreciate all the responses. Before I read them I was able to actually uninstall Morpheus (still couldn't access the files left in the Morph folder) but The system would let me finish of the Morpheus folder. It deleted everything in it as well. I guess that does sound like a permissions thing. I figured out where to turn off 'simple file sharing' , so now I can see all the security options on folder properties.
