CD RW drive repair?
Put a cd rw drive out of an old Compaq into a box I put together, I think it's a 4x4x32,or thereabouts. Got Roxio installed , but the drive wont recognize the blank disk. I can hear it stop, start, click a little. I don't think this drive has had that much use as the Compaq it came out of hadnt.I'm hoping its just dust. I have , at various times seen topics on cleaning , lubing etc. Clean the lens maybe? And how do I do that?

This site seems pretty useful...even has step by step instructions with pics. http://www.geocities.com/liru67/clea...w__part_1.html
Also, when you say that the drive won't recognize a blank disc...do you mean that Roxio doesn't recognize it? Have you tried Nero or any burning software?

you mention putting in the CDRW and installing a program Roxio, but did you install the correct drivers for that CDRW?
If you did, then cleaning can be as simple as wiping the lens in the CDRW with a q-tip. Beware that laser is powerful and the device should not be plugged in while looking at the lens.
Could lase a hole through your retina, I donno... |

Good link and info, Mike:
I'll have to bookmark that, in anticipation of that day when I will need it.
Thanks for the link.

I've heard there can be some compatibility issues with certain CDRW's only recognizing the software that they've been bundled with??
(Dunno much about it tbh, I'm looking for a link to the review that I read a couple of weeks ago... Will let ya know if I find it

From what I can tell , Roxio sees the CDRW , it names the speed etc, but when I put the blank in , it just kinda sputters, not spinning up. Roxio says put in a blank cd, I do , nothing happens and I know its a blank cause I just opened it. I will follow the link above, fiddle it a little , let you'all know the results.
edit: its in pieces...waiting for the wife to get home with some of that air in a can we can't live without!!!

Well I think it's working, blew it out with some canned air. Lubed a bit. I'm erasing a rewritable disc with it right now. As far as the link above Martoch, it was useful , but for me , it was not quite as easy as on the page . Again it was useful. Thank you very much.

In my case, I'm halfway thru a job when I realise that unlike me, the person who wrote the guide probably knew what they were doing??? LOL
