Systems need help with serv-u/smartftp

this is what is happening so far.

i just installed serv-u and smartftp.

i can not get a connection on smartftp.

i have zone alarm and a linksys router befsr41.

i used "ftp.mp3.com" as the domain name.

i assigned an account login name and a password and set account admin privilee as "group"

i have port 21 open(or so i think)

in "pasv port range" i put 2000-2010

i put a check in "block FTP_bounce attacks and FXP"

in "allow passive mode data transfers use IP" box blank

allow passive mode data transfers and allow MDTM command to change file date/time both have a check in the boxes.

what other changes do i have to make to serv-u?

what changes do i have to make to smartftp?

what changes do i have to make in my router?(running latest firmware)

thanks for any help.

robin

btw---these two systems also have file/print sharing enabled.

i am able to see shared drives on both systems.

robin

still working on server

i think my problem maybe with my host name.

i get this error when i try to use smartftp----

resolving host name

unknow error

connection closed

what would be my host name?

i thought all i had to do was type---ftp.mp3.com.

came accross this---

http://www.linksysftp.org/tcpip.php

i did everything in this tutorial and still no connection.

just wanted to update you on what i have been doing. i changed everything back to the way it was before i started messing around with the settings.

back to waiting for help.

http://www.linksysftp.org/servu.php

so you set it up exactly like that and no go?

i know with my FTP behind my linksys i had to turn off passive mode, but i use Bulletproof and just put the ftp into the DMZ host.

FXP is not a bad thing too, it is an easy way for users to send files from a server to your server. they play the middle man and doesn't use any bandwidth from them.

maybe i'm not connecting to smartftp correctly.

in the address box i put "ftp.mp3.com" is this correct?

then i put the login, password and no check in the anonymous box and then hit connect.

You have to forward your ports in your router. You are using port 21 right? Go into your router and fwd that port and maybe set the filter. I have a netgear and had to search thier site to find out how.

Also for pasv to work I think you should set the passive port range from 20-21 or 22. I had pasv working with DSL but switched to cable and now I can't get it to work so I'm kinda stumped on that.

Are you on a fixed ip? if not you need something like no-ip.com to update your ip.

hmmm. another idea. Some ISP's block servers. You might have to try a high port number to get it to work. try 55555. That worked for me.

How are you testing it? You can't test it with your same pc/isp. You might get it to work with this. Or get somone to try it.

Feel free to icq me if I can help.

Have you tried just connecting with the ip address? If it's going to the internet to resovle ftp.mp3.com it's not going to work...since you don't own the mp3.com domain name and ftp.mp3.com won't point to your ftp computer.
dragonb

edit...btw..I'm assuming you have 2 computer setup both going to the router, is that right? Are you trying to access the ftp server from over the internet, or just from the other computer?

i have 2 computer both going to the router.

i went to no-ip.com and i think i now have a host name.

:ftpmp3.no-ip.info"

i have port 21 forwarded in the router.

i scanned my system at grc.com and this is the results:

port 21 is closed. your computer has responded that this port exists but is currently closed to connections.

this scan was done on the system that has serv-u installed on it.

robin

bhess---i tried that site and it says server name is not valid.

i did something wrong at no-ip.com

back to the drawing board.

Here is a link to a write up I did for setting up an FTP server behind a firewall. It may help you.

btw if you have port 21 forwarded to your FTP server and it says that it is closed then zone alarm must be blocking access.
