oh ok....thanks!...Also..this swap file thing has always confused me...what should I make my settings initial and max size? I have 512 megs of RDram. I am using both windows xp pro and win2k.. Thanks for any help!!
If he has 512mb of memory its best rule of thumb is to make the pgfile 1.5 times the amount of ram. I set mine to twice times the amount of ram I have. That is better than keeping it same size as yoru memory size.
In addition to custom settings, you also need to defrag your pagefile to maintain maximum performance. This can be accomplished with this free utility:
>M$ recommends 1.5X for smallest and 2.5X for largest.
if would be leery of rules like this.
the fact of the matter is, your optimium pagefile settings can only be determined through 'stressing' the system by running all the apps you typically use and then and then looking at some stats like the commit charge, etc.
on my primary home computer, i have 512mb ram and even under heavy load, my pagefile use rarely exceeds 130mb. thus my pagefile is set to 300mb total. if i were to set it to the recommended 1.5x, it merely wastes disk space...
It is not neccessary to have a 512MB pagefile unless you have the memory dump to the pagefile on a blue screen error. In this case your pagefile size would need to match ram size or more. Otherwise, you can set it to whatever size you think will run your system the smoothest. I think's it's obvious that the more ram you have, the less swapfile you will actually use. That is unless you are a serious power user and have many apps or memory hungry apps open most of the time.
