Zeros recurring in address slots in XP and apps

When I try to enter a URL or search details in IE6, the slot fills up with recurring zeros continuously.
happens in IE6, Google, Start> Run in WindowsXP, Norton Antivirus and probably more.
Where to start?

Sorry! It was the keyboard. Had just cloned the disk , so I was thinking the worst case scenario.
