OS Basics?

I'm building a new system clean install of OS and such. What I want to know what are the basic programs that I should install for system maintenance and such.

I have adaware, norton firewall 2003, norton antivirus 2003, ws ftp, ws ftp server, and a few other goodies.

What else should I install?

which OS? If its w98 I usually replace the defragger from 98 with the one from WinME cuz its wayyy faster.

Also "power Defrag" is cool...peeps can click on it and restart comp and defrag without having to turn off running progs etc.

if its XP the main thing would be to turn off all the crap thats running that isnt needed.

theres a dude named "black viper" who has a site that tells how to do it.

Search google for "black viper xp tweaks"

There is no must, you only install the stuff you need and use.

Few programs that might be good:
*SiSoft Sandra (Benchmark and test the stability of your system in general)
Regclean (to clean junk and leftovers from uninstalled programs)
*StartCPL (to control the programs that starts up with your system and eat your resources)
*TweakUI (general system tweaking)

Windows has a program included with it to controll what starts up. I already have SiSoft Sandra. Were would I get regclean and tweakUI?

They are freewares .. i will edit this post with links to them (BTW, TweakUI and Regclean are a must have for me on every new install ..)

You will need a ZIP program also, if you don`t have one already. WinZip or WinRar are great ones.

Sorry, its not Regclean (made by M$), its RegCleaner the one i wanted to recommend.
Here are the links:
RegCleaner 4.3
Tweak UI 1.33
