Change modem init strings, the defaults might be inappropriate for your ISP and your situation. Also look for MTU setting utilities, they helped me a lot when I was running a 33.6, but I haven't tried them lately (MaxMTU).

Dialup at a time when there aren't so many users.

The real line speed isn't often related to your settings. It could be your line being bad, your isp not having enough boxes.

However, there is one setting that says what should be the max connection speed. If it is set to 28.8k, it won't go any higher.

http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/contweak.htm has some info on Dialup Tweaks. I made it up when Win98 was all the rage.

Cheers!

Don't forget if your phone lines are old in your area or your house wiring is not up to par, you won't see much of an improvement.

Yes...

My parents got 24.4 after all the tweaks I threw at it... now they have cable... much better.

Run a cat5 line directly to your machine from the exterior junction box. This avoids having other devices on the same line used for your Internet. The rule of thumb is within 36 feet from the exterior junction box.
Other devices on your line, answering machines, cordless phones, corded phones, fax machines, etc, create load on the 1 line looping through your house. Older lines leading to your house can create line noise which interferes with your connection rate. Don't use long extension lines for hooking your machine to the wall mounted connection box. 6' max.
If your telephone service provider is also responsible for the cableing in your area and is supplying your Internet connection, E.G. Telus Communications gives me my phone service and I use their ISP services, give them a call. Complain about poor connection to the Net.

Make sure you check out every possibility that could be the fault of your equipment first. You don't want to get a bill if found that it was your equipment.

Here is a link that will help you check everything out. Make sure you do the US Robotics line test.

Old pc 166mmx win 98 lucent win modem max speed=28.8kbps
New pc 1800xp win xp with the exact same modem=52.2kbps

The xp drivers for the modem were obviously a lot better
and got me up to 45.2kbps

Then i phoned my i/p and asked for a new dial up number
and they gave me a different number and that bumped it to 52.2
kbps, Try for a new dial up number....

It has to do with were u are situated and how much distance is there is between u and ur provider...

my best friend works for a i/p cable tv company
They have a dialup connection that is a lot faster than mine
He reckons there is a special cable connecting them direct
to thier phone provider (very big company) that is 4 inches round
They have dial up speed faster than some cable that i have used.

When downloading from i-mesh or winmx i can get a 5meg file
in 10-11 minutes, wich i think is reasonable ..(for dial up)

And i would not go to cable for a few reasons
1. Its getting slower (as more people use it)
2.The download limits are *deleted*.....
3.The cost of my dial up far outways the cost of cable and the
download limits (15c per extra mb, get real)
If i downloaded a gig in a month with cable i would hate to see the bill.
Whereas my dial up has no limits and the bill is always the same
SCREW CABLE WHAT A CROCK OF *deleted*
And i could download a gig in a month with dial up (easily)...
Next upgrade will be sattellite connection.....
