integrated network connector problems

i just purchased a new computer w/ an intgrated network connector (Asus p4t533/c)

i'm attempting to link my old and new compters via an ethernet connection

problem:

the OS on my new computer (Win XP) fails to recognize the connection.

The network setup wizard states that the LAN is unplugged. I have physicaly pushed the cat 5 cable into the socket and rebooted yet this error continues.

any suggestions?

Can it see the other way? Maybe it's just a share browse issue. Do you have a share setup?

Questions, questions, questions...

Cheers

Are you using a crossover cable?

Careful there ataylor17! Mick is lible to teach you a thing or three about networking.

One more question:

What's your ethernet connection, direct cat5 (crossover) cable connection or are you going thru a hub/router/switch? A direct connection with a cat5 (patch) cable won't work.

First-thank you for your replies-my questions should go to my computer builders tech support but i bought from a 'boutique' outfit and they only do 9-5

so

mickwish - i think so. my old computer (win95 os) has a linksys ethernet card installed and the software / 'explore' windows look as they should (far as i know)

the actual cable says 'Cat 5 UTP network cable' on the box and the diagrams indicate a 'to router' connection, not directly to another computer/NIC

amazingly, i acutualy have a router laying around (long story) i'll plug both computures into the router and see what happens

thanks again

Avoid using the winXP wizard if ya can. It's not always the best way.

Try setting IP's and subnets manually, then checking to see if you can ping. Helmig goes through some of this here.

Good luck.

mickwish,xeriod, and, msterzer,

hooked both comptuers to a router and now the new computer no longer has the error

i'm alwazed amazed at how simple computer problems often are and how ignorant i remain to be.

thanks again for taking the time to help a neophite.
