Cable modem speeds...

I just got a new cable modem from OOL after using the 3com cmx for 3 years which was an upgrade from their old non-DOCSIS lancity modem. Now, when I run a speed test at dslreports.com, I get incredibly high numbers.

2003-01-11 12:46:33 EST: 8706 / 936
Your download speed : 8706791 bps, or 8706 kbps.
A 1062.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 936621 bps, or 936 kbps.

Will I ever be able to achieve these results? I can download this file at 1.13Mb/s but will I ever see these speeds in real life? Same thing for upload... I can u/l to OOL at 950kb/s, but will I ever achieve these speeds in real life?

Too many factors affect the speeds of cable

Since you’re on a node with your neighbors sharing the bandwidth the more people you have the larger the slow downs. If you cable is good about upgrading and keeping up with the server load then you shouldn’t really be affect by this all that much. So at like 6 pm when everyone is home check your email your connection will be slower. But if its like2 am or 3 am when people are sleep you can reach high speeds

Another factor is the server you’re downloading from. This is what gets people. They think since they have cable they download fast everyone. This is not the case with servers having to share and send out the same file to other people who have broadband too.

GZ- I understand that it is a matter of what server I am accessing and I know that the test file which OOL had me try is on their high speed (probably DS* or OC*) backbone, but even in the middle of the night, other optonline users can not d/l faster than 200k from me. I am running an FTP sever and a web server and off the ftp people on my node can barely hit 150k. I was just curious if I will ever be able to utilize these speeds. Also, what does the "download speed" in my test result mean? It says that it is 8706 kbps but what does that mean? Is that some sort of overhead?

When I called up OOL and asked them what sppeds I was capped at they said as long as you do not abuse your privelages (I can't u/l to two ip's at the same time) I don't get capped. He said it's a max of 10 down and 1 up. So, I called back and asked if I was capped by any chance and they told me I wasn't. So, in the middle of the night, shouldn't I get speeds higher than 150k?

btw- thanks for the help gz!

Since your upload speed showed 936kbps you are not capped lower than all normal users of OOL. Lots of upload usage could get you capped upload. OOL will not tell us what the limits are that would activate it. I would suggest you read more about this at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/cable,opt

The guy at OOL told me that more than 5 gigs tranfered a day will get you capped and so will transfering to more than 2 ip's at the same time. Whether or not this is the only way to get capped is not in my knowledge, but I know that I have transfered way more than 5 gigs a day and no cap yet. I guess I'm just lucky. I too have gotten d/l speeds from various sites upwards of 1Mb/s, but I still don't know why an HTTP file transfer from my machine goes faster than an FTP transfer does.

The max I could reach on that file was 155 KB/s.

[EDIT] My ISP must be having service problems... I did the DSL test and it was WAY down than usual. Half the speed that I am usually at. Hmmm.... maybe try again later. I did how ever try that file again and I hit 200 KB/s. Still not up to par........... If it doesn't correct itself, my ISP will be getting a Phone Call!!!!!!

Sweeper- That file is on a ftp server on the backbone of my network. If I was to try to d/l a file off a server in Ohio, I too would probably be around 150 or 200 Kb/s. However, most of the sites that I d/l from are on my network. Mostly in my node actually. So, I don't think that I should be getting such substandard speeds at times when there is little network activity.
