IE blocking webpage content

Why do some web pages have blank spots with the little X box instead of a link or ad. I know this sounds noob but I've tried changing the security settings all the way to low low. Enabling Java, accepting all cookies etc. I am using lynksys router and win xp. Maybe the router is blocking some content?? Wife is trying to get a crossword site to work but can't see the crossword game just the main page with a giant white box with little x in corner.

Thanks Swamp

May not be a security issue, may in fact be an add-on you need to install. Like Flash or some such.

May also be poorly coded web pages.

Give us some examples and we can check 'em for ya, Swampy.

Cheers

No pop-up blocker installed, swampy?

Or did you ever have one? Some of them may be hard to uninstall...

Could also be content is not being completly loaded. Can you try a diff browser, like Mozilla or Opera maybe?

It sounds like you don't have Macromedia Flash and/or Shockwave installed, and for some reason the website isn't telling you this.

Macromedia Flash Player
Shockwave Player

i have installed the two programs that Kuasimodem suggested.

i am going to reboot and see if this corrects the mysterious Mr. Red X.

Robin, see if it's only IE or if it's something like the ISP, by installing another browser (like Opera or Mozilla) and see if Mr X still appears.

thanks mick and abie normal. Going to check her puter now.

Edit: I had to update everything on her puter SP1 and many other updates. She had it on automatic updates but I guess it doesn't update everything. Also installed norton. I could have sworn that was already on her system but I never go in her office unless summoned.lol

edit: update kuasimodem was right. I downloaded both shockwave and flash and page is fine now. I thought when you get to a page like that it would tell you "you need %%%%% installed to view this page would you like to install it now"?

Mick I did have zone alarm installed, but not now.

Thanks

Swamp
