100% cpu usage just for a second

hi all,
im not to great with computers and this seems like a good place to go for some help

i am running windows xp pro on a pentium 3 800mhz with 512 mb ram. from what i have read this is good enough to power win xp. i have noticed my computer all of a sudden slowing up and then getting back to where it was again. so i checked the cpu usage and it will be going from about 0% - 2% and then all of a sudden will just shoot up to 100% then come back down again.
the main thing that is annoying me about this is when it happens and im playin games the framerate drops down to about 10 fps. i was thinking that maybe its one of the things running in the background that i could close off or maybe its getting too hot?

any help u guys could give i would appreciate.
thanks
PastranA

Run Adaware to remove any spyware from your HDD.
For caution, run a virus check to make sure everything is clean.

After doing so, check what is taking these CPU cycles..
In Task Manager, just press the Process tab and CPU column then it will pop the most active thing to the top.

BTW, even if the CPU is hot it shouldn`t behave like that.

Hi PastranA.

I'm not sure about Win XP, but when I had the system restore thing activated in Win ME the same thing happened to me. Try disabling it and see what happens! I'd also do all those things KenKun suggested! Hope it works man, see ya!

Like kenkun said you should be able to track down the culprit by running the task manager. Heck, keep it open till the process shows itself. Also, when you first look at TM, it will be at 100% for a split second, thats normal.
