I just setup a guildFTP server today, and I like it better than servU becasue it is free and you can limit how much data people can upload.

I have been trying to link me and my brothers computer over the net for a long time but haven't had any success so far. I just happened to have a Netgear RT314 Router and have basically been having the same dramas as d1sc g0lf3r. I am not the most tech savvy person in the world but have so far understood everything except this part:

Quote:
Assigning your FTP Server a Static IP address

To assign a static IP address to your FTP Server you need to right click “My Network Places” and choose “Properties”. This will open the “Network and Dial-up Connections” window. Right click “Local Area Connection” and choose “Properties”. This will open the “Local Area Connection Properties” window choose “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)” and click the properties button. Check the radio button “Use the following IP Address” and enter an IP address that is not in use. If you are going to run the DHCP server on the router I suggest using something like 192.168.0.100 as this is not within the DHCP pool so you should not have any conflicts. If you are going to disable the DHCP server in your router you can assign your machine any IP address between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.254

The Subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0
The Default gateway will be 192.168.0.1
The Preferred DNS server will be 192.168.0.1
I have Windows 98 so this part lost me. I assume this is all windows 2000? Could someone explain what's they're doing here; and where is the "192.168.0.100" address inputted in the serv-U configuring? And what if there are a few computers on the network; will setting this static IP affect their IP's?

Quick question:

How do you change you FTP Server mode, i.e. Active or Passive in Serv-U?

I know this is easy to do in GuildFTP

Under your server name there is a settings option choose that the click the advanced tab and there is a check box to allow you to use passive mode.

Under the settings for whatever.younamedyourserver.net choose the advanced tab. Now check the box that says "Allow passive mode"
Do you mean that check box?

My friend can't connect when his client is in passive mode, he gets 'Connection Timeout'. When he changes to Active mode it works fine. What is the norm, i.e. which mode should an FTP server be in?

Also can I use my DynDNS name instead of the IP when I check this box?

Yes

The server is not in either mode per say it just allows clients that are trying to connect in passive mode to connect. By checking that box you are just allowing the clients the alternative of connecting in passive mode.

I am going to guess no (though I have never tried it.) but I say this simply because it is asking for an IP. Don't be worried about having to manually change that IP the FTP server will automatically update that IP address for passive mode for you.

Hey, what are you supposed to do about network sockets?? Apparently serv-u sucks them up along with DeeEnEs..When I have them running I can only have aol instant messanger on and 1 internet page running, then all the sockets are used...do you know how I can set my computer/programs so that my sockets don't run so low??

Also, does client for microsoft network login and client for microsoft family login give the same amount of sockets available to the computers resources?

File Transfer Protocol. It basically allows you to connect to a FTP Server from anywhere and transfer files between the two.

I've been thinking about trying this for some time now. I just didn't know what the best software to use is. Thanks for whomever posted this thread.
