thanks for the help guys......i'll try the 98 boot disk first as i have access to that now.....if not.....i'll go home and get my xp disk. i'll let you know.

yeah....wierd on the wd install thing too. what it didn't like is that the main drive....the 40gb was ntfs, and that they only allowed a fat32 format.....it said it couldn't continue.

All you have to do is boot to XP, go to control panel, administrative options, computer management, disk management then right click on the space next to disk1, and choose create partition, then follow the wizard. It will format the drive and create partitions however you want them.

I am assuming you have it installed as primary slave.

Or off the Win98 bootdisk, run fdisk, change the drive (option 5) to the new disk, then create your partitions from there, if you want it as one big drive then choose create extended partition, max that, then create logical drive, and you can choose the drive sizes from there. When done exit, it will ask you to restart your comp. then boot to XP, go to Windows explorer and right click on drive (x): It might show up as drive E: if he has 1 CDrom, F: if he has 2. then choose format and format the new drive.

I'm working from Win2k so if anyone knows if this is different for XP change as appropriate.

ok---finally got it. i booted from xp disk to create partition on the new drive. it wouldn't let me format without installing xp pro on the new disk (friend has xp home). it tried to install pro but for some reason couldn't. the hd light never came on. just sat there. had to eject cd and cancel install. then on boot it tried to boot to xp pro. finally got to get home to boot and was able to see the drive in "my computer." still couldn't format from there, so went to control panel-->administrative tools-->computer managment-->storage-->disk managment. was able to format the drive there into ntfs. only took about an hour to format and finally we're good. what a process.

thanks for all your help.

one more question......how would a person who has an hp reinstall windows? they don't ship with an xp cd. he thinks he may have a "restore cd" somewhere at home.

thanks again.

wizard of oz-->process slightly different than you said, but was able to find it through your direction. things are just labeled slightly different in xp than 2k.

He needs the restore CD to reinstall the OS and HP included software. Other than that, he has to buy an XP CD.

Media HP Recovery disks

HP machines that run XP have a protected hidden partition, no recovery disks, to access this partition start the machine and hold down the F10 key while booting this will allow you to access the HP recovery console.
