a "LAN" over the internet

Is there a way to set up a "virtual" LAN over the internet so my friends and I can play games over this virtual "LAN"?

You could use a VPN to establish them on your network, dont know how that would work with networked games though.

A VPN can work but it may introduce significant latency for gaming.

I doubt it would be worth the trouble.

You need to have Internet routers with fixed IP addresses on both ends. Then you can do tunneling. This is essentially packing the local network packets into internet packets and having the receiving router on the other side unpack and forward them onto the remote half of the "local" network.
