Any thoughts on Gateways 2 for 1 deal?
http://www.gateway.com/home/deals/of...uy1get1.shtml#
Basically, buy their "high end" lappy or desk top w/ 19" LCD, and get a celery 2.0 ghz, 128mb DDR SDRAM, 40gig HD, 48/24/48 cdrw without monitor.
I really need a portable, and could use an upgrade for my P2 450 at home too.
Good deal, or not so good?

If you look at the cost of their highest end laptop, which you have to buy to get the freebie, it isn't worth it. Unless, of course, you had planned on buying that particular laptop in the first place. But for $500 or $600 less, you could still get a super nice Dell laptop and spend the money you saved on a Dell desktop that would kick the freebie's butt.
Just MHO.

the high-end desktop is way too expensive even w/the free celery thrown in. the lappie is a little more reasonably priced but still not low enough to make this "2-fer-1" a deal.
my advice...steer clear.

don't do it....i went to powernotebooks.com and tried configuring a laptop with similar specs on the sager np6160 ultra (mind you this was real quick and i couldn't get it exact)....15 inch screen, 2.4 gig pentium 4, 40 gig hard drive, 512 MB (1 stick too, which costs an extra 100 with gateway) and a lot of the other same stuff as the gateway laptop and the price? $1640 without shipping, including the gateway rebate, there is a $759 difference, and you could get a better desktop (than the free gateway one) with that amount of money...i wouldn't do that deal...while you get two computers for one, you are paying for both of them in the price of the first one

That was my thinking too! Don't you love it when they call it a "two-fer" -- They should call it a "too much-fer"

I dislike the Gateways, the cases change several times per year with NO improvement in access or cooling.
This is unlike Dell machines which show gradual improvements throgh the years. They always open with buttons, the newest machines have a large green duct with a 3" fan and low restriction screen on the back.

I don't like the new Dell mid-tower case that I have at work, but I will say the machine is quiet! The power light is small, and sometimes I have to lean down to see if the machine is running, because I can't hear it.
