Same pb here

Hi, I searched with google for help in my problem and found this thread...
The problem here is the same problem:
I power my computer, every thing goes well, the win xp logo and load bar shows up, few seconds and walllllaaa! nothing... only black screen. The HDD light blinks and dances but nothing happens...
I tried Last Good Configuration... same problem...
Tried Safe Mode... excactly as above, many sys files (last one is mup.sys) but nothing moves... the HDD light blinks and then stops.

Now, I followed the comments but got lost somewhere in the middle..
another problem is that my Win XP cd is hmmm... well... broken
I asked my friend to bring me his cd on sunday but I'm not sure that re-installing win xp will solve this problem (Although it does help sometime)

Here are some details about my computer:
Pentium3 935Mhz
1 x Maxtor 40GB HD (WinXP installed on this one, NTFS) currently replaced with my brother's Seagate 6.4GB HD (With WinME installed)
1 x Seagate 20GB HD (WinME detected it but it's not currently working because I don't have it's drivers)

Please help, I can't use my brother's HD forever...

Data Recovery

Well, I looked at Maxtor's website for help and found this PowerMax you talked about.
I made a floppy and ran the advanced test, PowerMax gave me this code: D27S57
I looked in Maxtor's site but there was no specific information about this code, from what I understood, my harddisk worth nothing...
My question now is:
What can I do to save all the information?? Right now the bad HD is connected but it has two partitions- C: and E: (Damn with this computer lab, they messed everything) Only E: shows up in My Computer and the most important files are on C:
Would scandisk help? maybe I have a bad sector?

This isnt the one I was looking for, but it is similar...

here are some last ditch suggestions...
you have IBM brand HD so I dont think a utility from another brand will help you much if at all.... I think rekless meant that maybe IBM offers something similar for disk recovery/diagnosis.
Good Luck man!

OMG LOL

Freeze, drop, hit, smash and if these won't work... throw it away...
I don't realy think that freezing a harddisk is a good idea but I've got nothing to lose...
I prefer to take the screwdriver and open the hd but I see that a special screwdriver is needed for this job...
Anyway, thanks a lot for this help.

p.s.
The os hd is the master and the scond one is the slave but it doesn't realy matter, I think that Win ME just doesn't support NTFS

You must wait about 60 sec until Your XP boots up. Black screen decepiers after 60sec. This is HDD or XP problem. I connot tel now. I had the same problem myself.
