wonder if linux could view it any better.. maybe try knoppix or somethign to boot up, and see what it can see on the NTFS partition.

If anything with a little playing around you might actually get a real error instead of the standard dummy windows errors.

That's cool Mortis, thanks for trying!

Oh brother I've never messed with Linux vass, but sometimes (like right now) I wish I had a Linux box set up.

*sigh*

6,000 mp3's....gone

I don't plan on starting a new collection, that took forever to build up.

Sad thing is I was going to put every single mp3 on my sister's computer (along with a new LiteOn 48x burner) so she could burn away...she's on dialup and can't afford broadband.

that's why I was suggesting knoppix, it runs off the cd .. no installing required
Hoping it could automatically detect the NTFS drive and mount it...
is it worth trying and *possibly* getting your mp3's back or hell with it and possibly lost?

you try those data recovery services...but it might be like 1 in 14 you might get your stuff back... considering the infamous deathstar is basically sitting there, slouching and wasting your time...

Forget it, I just noticed your drive seems to be NTFS - I don't think Snoop works with that - Sorry !!!!

Martoch, try tapping the drive on the side lightly with a 5 pound hammer.

OK, with the plastic end of a small screwdriver. Seriously. To errr...dislodge stuff. The heads sometimes get stuck.

Is your important stuff (mp3, pics) on that drive? I'm sure being the thorough and careful guy that you are you must have backed them to a CDs/DVDs. So all you have to worry about is a lousy $50 40GB drive. Right?

So sense getting bent over it.

Just tap it lightly on both sides and try.

If this fails, throw it away.

Right on bud, my personal stuff--family pics/videos--get backed up regularly onto CD's as well as another drive. I lost 6K mp3's and apps that I can download again...um, I mean...purchase again.

Most of the mp3's came from discs that I made in Kuwait...I would say I lost maybe 200 or so...the rest are on CD's to copy over again I guess.

I'm not bent, I already put that Lego Racers game back onto my comp.

Thanks for helping me look at it in another light...

Here at the big moo we had an actual documented step for "fixing" a clicking drive. It was to Tap it with a Hammer. This was because the Lube used in the bearings would get stuck, and tapping it would loosen the grease. I cannot remember the Maker of the drive now, as this was from about 6 years ago...

Its called "the click of death" and generally applied to Western Digital.

The Click of Death is a well known IBM Deathstar trick, I've never had a WD do it.
