AMDk2-500 running Win2K on a gigabtye m/b...

took hard drive out and popped it into a box with an AMD/2000 and an ECS m/b...

starts to boot, gets half-way thru the loading windows and reboots...tried going into safe mode...never made it...endless loop reboot...

any quick trick tips to make it go? thanks in advance...

The difference between chipsets on the two motherboards ( and age, as well ) prolly means that the HAL ( hardware abstraction layer ) will be different between the two machines.

The only way to change the HAL ( that Im aware of ) is to reinstall the operating system.

I'm far from a 2k guru, however, so someone else may have better insight. . . .

I have never done that with win2k, I have done it with win98 and all it does is detect the new hardware and ask for the win98 cd and then reconfigures itself for the new hardware.

As for Win2k there is a way to replace the HAL (hardware abstraction layer) but is not easy. I suggest booting the system off the win2k CD and do a repair.
Good Luck

tnks...one other person suggested the repair option...I'm a little paranoid about screwing up some important data on the drive...was hoping for a quick and easy fix but think I'll have to try and clone the drive for a back up and then switch boxes and try the repair...appreciate it...
